H.G. Wells on the manner in which the world shall meet its end

He gazes towards the camera with a grave, contemplative expression while holding his spectacles in one hand and a pencil in the other. Papers and an open book lie across the desk before him, while a shaded lamp illuminates stacked books at left. Dramatic chiaroscuro isolates Wells against the shadowed study, lending the portrait an austere, intellectual atmosphere.
