A masterpiece wrought by the hand of Peter Driben, a luminary of illustration, adorns this vintage cover of Wink, a purveyor of pulchritude, dated 5 March 1949. Its tagline, ‘A Whirl of Girls’, is displayed prominently below the title. Our cover girl is a siren with tresses of flame, her pose a beguiling invitation. Clad in a bodice of crimson and a skirt of night, she reveals glimpses of temptation, adorned with silken hose held aloft by garters. In one hand, she toys with silken threads, while the other playfully entwines with her fiery locks. The cover headlines include ‘She Strips to Conquer’, which teases content on page 24, and on page 26, a discourse on feminine allure. The overall aesthetic is a bold tapestry of colour, a quintessential emblem of the style and spirit of mid-20th century pulp magazines.
