Is anyone truly in the Yuletide spirit this year? I concede that certain irrepressibly optimistic—or perhaps delusional—individuals will remain ‘holly jolly’ regardless of circumstances; we shall forever be cursed with such Pollyannas in any given debate. For many Americans, however, 25 December is often marked by profound melancholy and solitude. In light of the rotten year we have had and the absolute horrors awaiting in 2025, one might argue that we scarcely deserve a holiday. Part of me believes it would be prudent to forgo the occasion altogether for the foreseeable future, as we have proven unworthy of its respite and have forgotten the ‘reason for the season’. #JustSaying
