Queen of the Blues

A colour album cover depicts Dinah Washington seated in a relaxed, intimate pose, smiling warmly towards the camera with her chin resting lightly upon one hand. Her dark hair is arranged in an elegant sculpted coiffure, complemented by vivid coral lipstick, earrings, a delicate pendant necklace, bracelets and a ring. She wears a low-cut coral-pink evening dress embellished with shimmering floral embroidery and scalloped edging. The softly blurred blue-grey background and out-of-focus reddish foreground shape lend the portrait a candid, almost conversational warmth. At upper right, bold lettering identifies “DINAH WASHINGTON” and the album WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES!; a Jazz Images mark appears at lower left.
Mercury Records, 1959

Elegance in every note: Dinah Washington, born 29 August 1924.
