Fair Winds, Miss Blondell

A vintage black-and-white publicity photograph shows Joan Blondell seated beside a tranquil pond beneath drooping willow branches. Smiling brightly, she wears a sleeveless light-coloured playsuit with a low neckline, decorative buttons and matching high-heeled shoes. She holds an elaborate model sailing ship at arm’s length, apparently positioning it beside several larger model yachts arranged against a tree. Blondell sits upon a cushion atop an overturned wooden canoe, while an oar lies diagonally across the grass in the foreground. The waterside setting, miniature vessels and relaxed summer costume give the carefully staged portrait a playful, whimsical quality characteristic of early Hollywood publicity photography.
